Mother’s Day is celebrated on the second Sunday of May, which falls on the 14th this year. Many people take part in honoring the mother of the family. It has become a well-known holiday in almost every country. Even Japan has started celebrating Mother’s Day. Moms receive presents, flowers, or cards from their children or husband.
In the Philippines, Mother’s Day is well-celebrated because we believe it is a great responsibility to be a mother and it’s never easy to become one. Many TV shows and programs as well as movies center about the hardships of being a mother. There’s this famous actress whose role is a mother in a movie and she’s become one iconic character. The title of the movie is “Anak.” Although the title is directly translated as a “child” in English, it centers to the mother’s role and the difficulties of working in a foreign country and leaving the small children behind. It was indeed an award-winning movie about a daughter who has only known her mom when she was a little girl and a mom who had abandoned her children. When the daughter grew up, she ended up being reckless having a wasted life. This movie is a great reminder of how a mom really loves her children and what she’s willing to sacrifice and do for her family. A lot of Filipino children can relate to this movie since many parents work abroad to provide for their family.
I believe every mom loves her family. All of us are called “children” of our parents but only the chosen ones can be “mothers.” It’s a challenging role but it’s rewarding once we’re able to raise our children as good individuals and citizens.
